Why we built Cloak
We were tired of choosing between privacy and the features we actually use.
We wanted to hang out with friends, share files, hop on video calls, and manage communities, all without handing our conversations over to platforms that collect, scan, and monetize them. The private options felt stripped down. The feature-rich ones didn't care about privacy. Nothing fit.
So the two of us started building Cloak: a platform with the features we loved and end-to-end encryption for ordinary chat messages, calls, and private uploads. Public sharing and service integrations have their own privacy boundaries, explained in our Privacy Policy.
Your conversations are yours. That's not a feature; it's the whole point.

Encryption you don’t have to think about
Ordinary chat messages and calls are encrypted on your device. Choose private uploads for encrypted files, or public uploads for shareable media such as memes and reels. Public links do not use end-to-end encryption.
Video calls nobody else can listen to

A small company with nothing to sell but the product.
Cloak is built and operated by Cloak Software LLC, a small independent team based in the United States. We're funded by subscriptions, not by advertising or data, which means our only customer is you, and our only incentive is to keep your conversations private.
No investors pushing for engagement metrics. No ad network asking what you talked about. Just software that does what it says.

What we can't see
Ordinary chat message bodies
Encrypted on your device with X25519 key exchange and AES-256-GCM before it reaches the network. Our servers store and relay ciphertext.
Voice & video calls
Call media is end-to-end encrypted by the browser or native client. The service handles signaling and routing metadata and relays encrypted media.
Files in your vault
Encrypted on your device before HTTPS upload. File keys are encrypted before storage and shared with authorized recipients. Public CDN uploads are a separate, non-E2EE path.
Plaintext private keys in backups
Private keys are generated and used locally. The service stores public keys and encrypted recovery backups. A separate recovery secret protects those backups; local storage protection depends on your platform.
