Voice, Rebuilt

• New Voice Engine: Microphone, camera, screen share, soundboard, and incoming audio now run on a rebuilt engine. Input volume and noise suppression strength apply immediately while you are in a call. No restart, no 'initializing noise suppression' banner.
• Input and Output Volume in Settings: Settings > Voice & Video now has Input Volume and Output Volume sliders (0 to 200%) next to the device pickers, the same controls that live in the in-call popover. A saved 0% now stays at 0% instead of quietly resetting to 100%.
• Live Mic Meter and Mic Test: A segmented level meter under the Volume Threshold slider shows your microphone in real time, with markers for the activation and sustain thresholds. Mic Test (Let's Check) now runs your voice through the exact processing chain a real call uses and plays it back through the output device you selected. The in-call mic popover uses the same meter and keeps showing your level while muted or holding Push to Talk.
• Noise Suppression Levels: The on/off switch is now a three-way choice: Off, Standard, or Enhanced. Standard adjusts itself. Enhanced unlocks the Suppression Level slider for louder surroundings, and changes take effect right away.
• Thresholds in Decibels: Volume Threshold and Voice Sustain Threshold show real dB values instead of 'more' and 'less sensitive' captions, and the sustain slider now covers the full range with its own marker on the meter. The speaking ring on your voice row and gallery tile follows the same thresholds. Push to Talk bypasses them.
• Soundboard Follows Your Output: Soundboard sounds play through the output device you chose in Cloak (not the system default) and move with you if you change device mid-sound. A sound now stops or re-levels when you deafen, block the sender, the sender is server muted, you change channels, or you adjust the soundboard or per-person volume.

Voice Fixes

• Camera Already On When You Join: Joining a channel where someone's camera was already on used to show a plain avatar tile with nothing to watch. Their video is now offered the same way as a camera turned on after you joined.
• Reconnect Recovery: Rejoining after a dropped connection now carries the correct voice group, a voice server that was momentarily too busy is retried instead of treated as a final refusal, a disconnect that truly cannot be retried ends your seat instead of showing you as still connected, and reconnecting while in DMs no longer waits through a five second timeout.
• Plain-Language Join Errors: The Connection failed toast now explains what happened (unreachable server, timeout, refused, interrupted) instead of showing raw engine text.
• Screen Share Quality: The quality list in the gallery share menu only offers presets your plan or the server's boost level can deliver. A boosted server's higher share quality is now actually available in voice, and some long-standing Pro accounts that were being treated as Free in these checks get Pro treatment again.

Cloak Basic: Make It Yours

• Cosmetics on Basic: Basic now unlocks an animated avatar, a banner image, background and accent colours, a custom voice tile, your own video background, custom emoji in any server (including DMs), soundboard sounds from any server, and custom or shared themes. Everything functional and private stays free: profile presets, blur and built-in video scenes, stock themes, Custom CSS, bio, and custom status.
• Already Using These? If you had one of these cosmetics set before this release, your account receives 30 days of Basic credit so nothing changes right away. Cosmetics are never deleted: if a subscription lapses they fall back to the free look and come straight back when you resubscribe.
• Pricing and Features: The plan comparison now lists custom profile, custom emoji in any server, soundboard sounds in any server, custom and shared themes, and video backgrounds per tier.

Emoji, GIFs, Stickers, and Soundboard

• One Picker: The emoji, GIF, sticker, and soundboard pickers are now one picker with GIFs, Stickers, Emoji, and Soundboard tabs (Soundboard shows while you are in voice). Reactions, the right-click emoji menu, custom status, role and sound icons, and forum posts all use it, so reactions get search and skin tones too.
• Skin Tones: A tone button beside the emoji search picks from six skin tones. Your choice is remembered and applies to the grid, typed shortcodes, and the quick-reaction bar.
• GIF and Sticker Browsing: The GIF and Stickers tabs open on Favorites, Trending, and categories, then show results in a masonry grid with real aspect ratios and infinite scroll. Tap the heart on any GIF or sticker to keep it in Favorites.
• Soundboard Tab: Sounds are grouped by server (your voice server first, then the default pack, then other servers) with a jump rail, search, a personal volume slider that only affects you, a headphones button to preview a sound privately, and a notice when you play sounds too quickly.

Sign-In, Accounts, and Updates

• No More False Secret Key Prompts: A flaky connection could make Cloak decide your secret key was missing and ask for it, even on a brand-new account. The check now retries and re-runs automatically after a reconnect before it ever prompts. A key you type is only saved after it proves it can unlock your data, so a typo can no longer lock an account out for good.
• The Secret Key Prompt Has a Way Out: The Secret Key Needed prompt can no longer be dismissed into a half-signed-in app. It offers your key, I lost my secret key, or a new Log out button, and the key reveal is acknowledged properly so it stops coming back on later sign-ins.
• Account Switching Unsticks Itself: A failed switch no longer leaves the account switcher permanently busy or hides that the account needs to sign in again. Old sessions are fully detached so their timers and replies cannot bleed into the new account, and sign-in calls time out instead of hanging forever.
• Check for Updates Gives One Answer: Settings > Check for updates now runs one combined check and shows exactly one result: Update available, Update ready (restart to finish), You're up to date, or Update check failed. The restart pill now applies a staged update instead of doing nothing, and the Update required screen recovers on its own instead of sitting on 'Checking for an update now'.

Everything Else

• Files Sort by Date: Settings > Files gains a Date sort (newest first) alongside name, type, and size, and each row now shows its upload date.
• Unread Clears on Every Device: Reading a channel on your phone or another desktop now clears its unread badge here too. A late or out-of-order message can no longer re-mark a read channel as unread.
• Drop Overlay Stops Sticking: Dropping a file into a forum post editor or the emoji uploader no longer leaves the 'drop files here' overlay stuck over the window, and dragging a file onto a forum channel with no post open no longer parks it to surface in the next channel you open.
• Better Connectivity on Restrictive Networks: Cloak can now reach each voice and chat node through an edge address before falling back to the direct connection, so networks that block or throttle QUIC (some corporate networks and VPNs) connect where they previously could not. Reconnects keep their place, so a lane change does not trigger a full re-sync.
• Updated Terms and Privacy Policy: The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy move to version 3, effective September 21, 2026, with clearer wording on what is end-to-end encrypted, what public uploads and imports look like to the service, and account recovery. Desktop, web, mobile, and cloak.chat now show the same text. You will be asked to review and accept them once they take effect.

Known Limitations

• Mic Test Needs You Out of Voice: Leave the voice channel before running Mic Test. Testing while connected is on the list.
• Enhanced Noise Suppression Is Desktop and Web Only: Mobile keeps its system suppression toggle for now, and the new voice settings (volume sliders, thresholds, mic test) are desktop and web only in this release.
• Skin-Toned Reactions: A reaction sent with a skin tone may show as the default tone until the emoji catalog update finishes rolling out. Emoji typed in messages are unaffected.
• New Installer for Update Fixes: The restart-to-apply and Update required fixes ship in a new installer, which Cloak downloads automatically. Until it is installed, an update may still need a manual restart.
• Voice, Video, and Capture: Behaviour still varies by device, driver, and operating system, and Bluetooth, USB, and sleep-wake cases are still being validated on the rebuilt engine. Reconnecting to the channel or refreshing the client resolves most stuck-session cases.

Cloak Basic: Make It Yours

Files

• Shared With Me: Settings > Files now has My files and Shared with me tabs. The shared tab lists files others have shared with you, with a Shared in picker to filter by server, and supports Share or save and Copy file ID. Manage sharing and Delete stay with the owner.
• Sort: A new Sort row offers Name, Type, Size, and Date. Date starts newest first, and tapping the active pill flips the direction. Pull to refresh and retry now act on whichever tab you are on.

Voice

• Camera Flip and Leave: Flipping the camera stops the old capture before starting the new one, and turning the camera off or leaving the channel releases it cleanly.
• Mute and Unmute: Rapidly muting and unmuting no longer leaves the microphone stuck, and the mute, unmute, deafen, and undeafen cue sounds no longer play late after you have already toggled again.
• Soundboard Stops When It Should: A playing sound now stops when you switch channels, block the sender, or the sender is server muted, and sounds still downloading count toward the play limit.
• Stale Rooms: Callbacks from a room you already left can no longer fire after a reconnect.

Sign-In and Accounts

• New Accounts No Longer See Secret Key Needed: While a brand-new account sets up its keys, the unlock screen now shows Setting up encryption with a spinner instead of asking for a key you never had.

• Account Switching No Longer Hangs: Leaving voice or closing the connection during a switch could leave you stuck under the transition cover. Both are now time-boxed, a leftover login watcher can no longer re-activate the wrong account, and a failure during key restore shows an error instead of a screen that never resolves.

Everything Else

• Unread Clears on Every Device: Reading a channel on desktop or another device now clears its unread badge on your phone too. A late or out-of-order message can no longer re-mark a read channel as unread.

Known Limitations

• Auto Gain Control Starts Off: Auto gain control now defaults to off and will read off after this update regardless of your previous setting. Turn it back on in Settings > Voice & Video if you prefer it.
• Video Backgrounds Are Desktop Only: The Basic perk list shows your own video background, which applies on desktop. Mobile video backgrounds are not available yet.
• Skin-Toned Reactions: A reaction sent with a skin tone may show as the default tone until the emoji catalog update finishes rolling out. Emoji typed in messages are unaffected.
• Voice and Video: Behaviour still varies by device and OS version. Leaving and rejoining the channel or relaunching the app resolves most stuck-session cases.

Refer Friends

• Share Your Link: Settings now has a Refer Friends page with your personal link (cloak.chat/r/YOURCODE) and code. Friends can use the link, type the code during signup, or add it in Settings within their first seven days. Joining through a server invite also credits the person who made the invite.
• A Bonus When They Subscribe: When a friend subscribes and their subscription renews for a second month, you both get 30 days of Basic, and you get 30 more at each of their next two renewals, up to 90 days per friend. Referral days are banked and only count down while you are not already on a paid tier; your subscription page shows the balance.
• Forgot the Link? New accounts can enter a referral code within their first seven days. Joining through a server invite also credits the person who made the invite. Referral activity shows up in your notifications inbox, and three new achievements track it.

Downloads and Saving Media

• One Download Folder: Every download now lands in the folder you choose in Settings > Files, with private (encrypted) files in a CloakPrivate subfolder. Files show a Show in Folder action while they are on disk, and both Settings > Files and the Download Manager can open the folder directly.
• Save Images, Video, and Audio: The video and audio players have a save button, and images (including ones in markdown) can be saved from the right-click menu on desktop or the long-press menu on mobile, which saves straight to your photo library.
• One Media Menu: Chat, hover toolbars, players, and the fullscreen viewer now share the same set of media actions, and the fullscreen viewer supports zoom.

Private Media

• Big Files Ask First: Private images, video, and audio over 8 MB show a Load button with the file size instead of downloading automatically, on desktop and mobile.
• Kept On This Device: Once loaded, private media is kept encrypted on disk (up to 2 GB on desktop, oldest removed first) so reopening a conversation does not download it again. A row under each large file shows its size with a Remove action, and the cache is wiped when you log out.

Spellcheck

• Every Field on Desktop: Right-click a misspelled word in the composer, message edits, or any settings field to see suggestions, Add to Dictionary, and a Spellcheck toggle. On Windows and Linux a Languages submenu picks the dictionaries; macOS uses the system checker.
• Code Is Left Alone: Code blocks, inline code, and emoji shortcodes are no longer underlined. On the web app the browser's own spellcheck menu is used, and the mobile forum editor now spellchecks too.

Voice and Screen Share

• Share Freezes After Alt-Tab: An application share that froze after switching windows during a static screen now recovers on its own, and viewers whose share stopped decoding re-request it automatically.
• Voice Stays Smooth Under Load: On Windows and Linux, Cloak raises the priority of its audio threads so voice does not stutter when the machine is busy.
• Voice Channel Limit: Voice channels, group calls, and DM calls hold up to 25 people. Trying to join a full channel now says so instead of failing silently.

Background Updatesc

• Small, Silent Updates: Desktop now pulls signed code updates directly from Cloak instead of downloading a full installer every release. Most updates are around 8 MB, download while you work, and apply the next time you open Cloak. At launch you'll see a short progress bar on the splash screen and the app restarts itself in a few seconds.
• Verified and Reversible: Every update is signature-checked before it runs. If a new version fails to start twice, Cloak automatically falls back to the previous working version.
• Clearer Full Updates: On the rare occasion the underlying app framework changes, Cloak now tells you it is closing to finish the update, posts a system notification, and shows "Finishing update" when it reopens instead of looking like a crash.
• Urgent Updates: Security fixes can be marked urgent. You'll see a "Cloak security update" prompt with a Restart Now button and a 30 second countdown.

Bot Invite Links

• Add Bots by Link: Opening a cloak.chat/bots/... link now launches a consent screen on desktop, web, and mobile. You'll see the bot's name, icon, and description, then pick which of your rooms to add it to.
• You Control the Permissions: Every permission the bot requests appears as its own toggle, with Select All and None shortcuts. Administrator is highlighted, and Listen in Voice warns that the bot will hear everyone in any voice channel it joins.
• Honest Warnings: Both the invite flow and Add Bot now explain that a bot receives the room's encryption key and can read and send messages wherever its role allows. Revoked links, missing Manage Server permission, and changed permission lists all show clear messages instead of failing silently.

Voice Reconnects

• Voice Survives Server Deploys: When a server is being updated, desktop and mobile now move your voice session to the new server ahead of time and keep your audio flowing. A full rejoin only happens if the handover isn't confirmed within a couple of seconds.
• Quieter Handovers: Planned reconnects no longer flash the reconnecting banner, blank the voice user list, or play the leave sound.
• Stuck Reconnecting Badge: Users who recovered by rejoining could show the amber reconnecting icon forever to everyone else in the channel. That badge now clears correctly and only appears if someone is actually reconnecting for more than a few seconds.

Known Limitations

• One More Installer: Background updates require the new desktop shell. Windows and Linux users will download one more full installer to get there; after that, updates apply in the background.
• Stream Quality Tag: The readout appears only on the spotlighted tile. Grid thumbnails are too small to read it and measuring them costs extra each second.
• Mobile Unlock Prompt: After updating, mobile may ask you to unlock once while it migrates your key to the new storage. On Android, changing your screen lock or re-enrolling fingerprints can still make local messages unreadable; sign in again if prompted.
• Voice, Video, and Capture: Behavior still varies by device, driver, and operating system. Reconnecting to the room or refreshing the client resolves most stuck-session cases.

Channel Threads

• Start a Thread You can now spin off a focused conversation from any message, or start a fresh thread directly from a text channel. Threads live under their parent channel and open in their own panel on desktop or their own view on mobile.
• Browse & Join Every channel has a threads browser showing what's active, and threads you're part of appear nested under the channel in your channel list. You can view members, invite others, and edit or archive threads you manage.
• Notifications That Make Sense Threads follow the same notification ladder as channels. Activity in your threads shows an unread dot, mentions and replies bump the badge count, and push notifications on mobile take you straight to the right thread.

Discord Import v2

• Original Authors, Preserved Imported messages now display their original Discord authors, with proper avatars and author cards, instead of being attributed to the importer. Pins and search results resolve imported authors correctly too.
• Claim Your History If your Discord messages were imported into a Cloak room, you can now link your Discord account under Settings → Connections and claim them as your own.
• Better Imports The import flow has been rebuilt with clearer progress, role mapping, and more reliable history transfer for large servers.

Message Actions, Rebuilt

• Cleaner Menus The hover bar and right-click menu on messages have been redesigned from the ground up. Actions are better organized, reactions show your frequently used emoji, and holding Shift surfaces quick destructive actions.
• Safer Deletes Deleting a message now shows a proper confirmation with a preview of what you're removing.

Fixes & Improvements

• Voice & Audio Another round of audio transport fixes for stuck and misbehaving voice sessions.
• Channel Reordering Dragging text channels and groups now handles edge cases correctly on desktop and mobile, so channels land where you drop them.
• Sign-In Reliability Fixed a transient failure that could bounce you back to the login screen even though your credentials were fine.
• Performance A broad optimization pass across search indexing, file uploads, and app startup paths.
• Small Fixes Text channels no longer flash a highlight when clicked, and several context menu quirks have been cleaned up.

Known Limitations

• Threads are in their first release. Notification behavior and thread management will continue to be tuned based on your feedback.
• Discord account claiming applies to imports made with the new importer. Rooms imported before this release don't carry original author information, so those messages can't be claimed.

Listening Parties

• Share Your Music While in a voice channel, you can now share what you're playing and host a listening party. Your track streams to the channel with album art, track info, and a live audience list.
• Listen Together Joining a party is always opt-in. Nobody hears your music, and you hear nobody's, until you choose to listen. You can hop in from the party card in the channel list or the party tile in the voice gallery, adjust the party volume with its own slider, and stop listening at any time. Choosing "join and listen" now survives reconnects and room switches, so late joiners land in the party correctly.
• Now Playing Activity You can optionally show what you're listening to as part of your presence, alongside game activity, with album artwork on your profile and activity cards. This is off until you turn it on, and a consent prompt explains exactly what gets shared. You can manage it any time under Privacy settings.

A New Chat Composer

• Formatting Toolbar The desktop composer has been rebuilt as a card with a responsive formatting toolbar: bold, italics, and friends, plus lists, quotes, code blocks, and link insertion, with your reply banner and actions (mentions, GIFs, emoji, timers, attachments, send) reorganized around it.
• Smarter Editing Shift+Enter now continues or exits lists and quote blocks naturally, GIFs and stickers have their own picker buttons, and code blocks are now left untouched by other formatting, so spoilers, links, and mentions no longer mangle their contents.

Smoother Voice on Mobile

• Voice Join Sheet Tapping a voice channel now opens a sheet showing who's inside, including their mute and deafen state, and lets you flip on muted or deafened before you actually join.
• Floating Voice Tile The old voice bar is gone. While you browse the rest of the app in a call, a draggable floating tile follows you, showing the current speaker, and snaps to whichever corner you leave it in.

• Audio Quality Fixed the crackle some users heard on quiet connections, the double mute noise, and a bug where remote voices could ramp in pitch and speed for several seconds after joining. Voice startup also gained an output limiter and a gentler noise-gate fade-in.

• Moderation Cases Moderators can issue formal warnings with a reason, review a member's history, and follow everything in a server moderation log. Warned members receive a clear in-app notice to read and acknowledge instead of a silent flag.

Known Issues

• Channel and server permissions are in very early alpha. Expect instability and missing functionality.
• macOS CoreAudio Tap backend has a known issue on macOS 26.0 where isRunning reports 0. The ScreenCaptureKit fallback is used automatically.
• App-specific audio capture may require the target application to be actively producing audio at the time of source selection on some systems.
• Push to talk key detection may not capture all modifier combinations on every keyboard layout.
